Good conversation. I think though that you have to recognize that Gaza has been destroyed and can no longer support its population. There is no one to rebuild it even if it could be rebuilt and the Israelis won't let it be rebuilt. Gaza is a prison that has been burned down and many people will have to leave to survive (and presumably almost every resident would like to leave). What this means is that a Palestinian state is now essential which can absorb some of Gaza's population.
Israel will never agree to a Palestinian State so the only possible solution is an internationally imposed settlement that Israel is required to adhere to create the new state in the West Bank, East Jerusalem and Gaza. The Israeli West Bank settlers have to be moved out by military force from the international alliance which would need to include the major Arab States, the US, Russia, the EU and possibly China if needed. The terms will need to be dictated to, and enforced on, Israel by the Alliance after taking into account Israeli views from all political sides. If the US pushed this it would happen but it would take a leader with vision. And the US does not have one in sight. The new state would need to be a real sovereign state and the military it is allowed would have to be determined by the international alliance and not by Israel. Short of such an international settlement imposed by force, there is no solution and the situation will end in a regional war.
Yeah, it's hard on all of us. Mickey's scheduled to do a podcast with me in early January, right before the Iowa caucuses (he'll be in Iowa, he thinks).

Bob, great recent pieces and interviews/discussions. I still miss Mickey though, Friday nights simply aren't the same.
